15/11 - What's new in November?

This months orchid in the picture: Maxillaria sanderiana

One of the largest flowering Maxillaria in the more then 600 species we know. The flowers can be 10 to 15 cm wide and appear on the base of the pseudobulb. This plant can be grown in a pot or hanging basket. They occur in Ecuador and Peru and grow in wet cloud forest between 1400 and 2500 meter. Maxillaria sanderiana is named in honor of Frederic Sander, a famous orchid grower of the 19th century with nurseries in St-Albans (U.K.) and Bruges (Belgium).
