Phalaenopsis lobbii

14/05 - What's new in May?
This months orchid in the picture: Phalaenopsis lobbii

A miniature epiphyte from the Eastern Himalaya regio al the way up to Myanmar and Vietnam. This specie grows on mossy pinewood trees, in deep shade at altitudes from 350 to 500 meters. We prefer to grow it on a slab of cork as the roots are flat and long. Some Phalaenopsis lobbii bend to drop leaves during winter. Once light levels resume new leaves grow back. The 1 cm to 1,4 cm large flowers appear on a short stem close to the leaves. Phalaenopsis lobbii has been used in several hybrids. Well known crosses are Phalaenopsis Micro Nova and Phalaenopsis Mini Mark. Phalaenopsis lobbii prefers to grow warm to intermediate with daily misting, except during winter when a dry periode is needed to induce flowering in spring.
