08/04 - What’s new in April?
This months orchid in the picture: Ornithocephalus gladiatus
This cute little epiphyte belongs to a genus with more than 50 species. They have typical fan shaped, fleshy leaves. They produce few to many inflorescences not much longer than the leaves. Flowers are 5 mm and mainly white with a touch of green in the center. This specie grows on shrubs in montane rain forests all over South America. We prefer to grow it on cork and this makes it an ideal terrarium plant. It likes temperatures between 15° and 24°C, a shady position and humidity around 80%. Water and mist regularly but make sure the plant dries out in between. This "jewel of the tropics" is an easy flowering orchid and therefor worth trying.
