This months orchid in the picture: Angraecum leonis
This medium sized, fan-shaped epiphyte is grown on a slab of cork. It requires high humidity (75-85%) and temperatures between 20 and 30°C. Two varieties are known in the wild: One in the north of Madagascar and another variety on the Comoros. Angraecum leonis blooms in winter with pure white flowers approximately 3 to 5 cm on short overhanging stems. This orchid has long lasting flowers with a strong jasmin scent during the night. Angraecum leonis is also known as Leon's orchid and has synonyms as Aeranthes leans, Angraecum humblotii and Macroplectrum leans. This species was described by Eduard-François André in 1885. As a medium sized plant grown on cork it is ideal for orchid collectors with a small conservatory or veranda. It can also been grown in a terrarium with high humidity.
